Davton SyncManager
Download here (1.8MB installer file) OverviewDavton SyncManager is an automated Synchronisation tool for users of Microsoft Outlook with Microsoft Exchange. It is designed to make a local copy of a Shared (Public) Contact Folder, so that the contacts are available easily in the users mailbox, and can be synchronised with the users PDA, Blackberry etc. One Way SynchronisationCurrently the SyncManager carries out a One-Way synchronisation (from Shared to Personal) folders. This means that changes made to the contacts in the local folder are not replicated back to the central folder. Depending on your use, this may be seen a good thing or a bad thing, but it keeps the usage simple, and protects the central folder. Synchronise up to Three Shared FoldersDavton SyncManager can synchronise up to three shared Contact folders to one local folder. This enables a user to keep a local copy of contacts from up to three public folders. Filter Shared Contacts on CategoriesDavton SyncManager can filter the Shared Contacts by Category so that only a subset of the contacts are copied to the local folder. This is useful where there are a large number of central contacts, and the user only wants relevant contacts copied to her local folder – for example on Contacts with Category ‘Northern Region’. Regular Automated SynchronisationDavton SyncManager will automatically run a regular synchronisation check at an interval which you specify (say every 60 minutes). As long as you are connected to a Network which can contact your Exchange Server, SyncManager will carry out a background synchronisation at regular intervals. It even works if Outlook is not open – next time you log in to Outlook and exchange, your updates will be waiting for you. If you prefer not to use Davton’s automation tool (SyncController) you can set up your configuration file and then run the SyncEngine directly as a Scheduled Task. How it works
Normally Davton SyncManager starts running when your computer starts in the morning. It is only visible from the system tray (normally on the bottom right hand corner of your screen) as an icon. At regular intervals (say every 60 minutes) it will run its Sync' Routine to keep your personal Contact Folder in-sync with your Public Contacts Folder. If you right-click the icon in the system tray, there is a menu of options available. These include stopping and starting the SyncTimer (the icon will change from Green to Red if stopped to show that the Sync will not run), retrieving statistics about the last Sync' Run, finding out when the next Sync' Run is due, and forcing a Sync Run to start Now! What it SynchronisesDavton Contact Synchroniser will not touch any existing contacts in your personal folder. When it moves contacts across from the public folder, it adds some extra information so that it can keep track of where the contact has come from. In fact it adds a note to the little used field 'Government ID Number' to say where the contact has been copied from. When it checks to see if the contacts are still up to date, and meeting the filter criteria, it will ignore any contacts that don't have the right information in the 'Government ID Number' field. If an update is made to a contact in the public folder, the next time you run the synchroniser, it will delete the (now out of date) copy of the contact in the local folder, and add a new updated copy. If you make a change to a contact in the local folder or on the PDA linked to the local folder it WILL NOT update the public folder. The changes will be over written next time a change is made to the contact in the public folders. The public folder effectively becomes the 'Master' contact folder - and any changes or updates are made there.
